FWA: Phil “Flash” Barker Returns To The FWA As Guest Timekeeper At New Frontiers

He was one of the catalysts that propelled the FWA to the top of British wrestling at the start of the decade; an iconic fan favourite who fought his way to the British Heavyweight Championship. But for Phil “Flash” Barker, the reality of life in 2009 is very different to those heady nights under the spotlight that he enjoyed in his heyday.
Having previously survived steroid abuse, cocaine addiction, a heart attack and agonising knee injuries, Barker is no stranger to adversity. But even for him this has been a tough year – within a matter of weeks he lost his job and his second marriage fell apart, plunging him into a deep depression. The doctors told him that the only way to pull his life back together was to get back to doing things that made his life exciting and gave it meaning – and in the case of Phil “Flash” Barker that could only mean one thing: he needed to return to wrestling.
Barker knows that he cannot expect to jump straight back into the ring as a main eventer, but says that it means the world to him just to be a part of the show. Although he eventually hopes to reach a sufficient level of fitness to compete for the first time since 2007, he is content in the short term doing a job whose importance is so often neglected: ringing the bell.
“In other countries it’s a massive honour to carry the bell into the arena and ring it,” Barker explained in an interview with FWA Radio that will be broadcast next week. “You look in Japan, it’s done by legendary retired wrestlers and it’s an intricate part of the show. At the end of the day, you can’t start or finish the match without a bell, so it would be my honour to be the timekeeper for the FWA.”
It will be a tough road back for Phil “Flash” Barker, but recent events have made him realise that wrestling is the only thing in his life that really seems to make sense. He knows that this comeback is his last chance to feel the adrenaline rush that comes with the roar of the crowd, and there is nothing more important to him in this life than the chance to live in that moment one more time. Join him as he starts his journey at New Frontiers, in the Broxbourne Civic Hall on Sunday 2nd August.
In an exclusive conversation with FWA Radio next week, Phil “Flash” Barker talks candidly about the highs and lows of his life in professional wrestling. It is one of the most deeply shocking and profoundly moving stories you are ever likely to hear – so make sure you visit www.fwauk.com from Friday 24th July to listen to this unforgettable interview.

FWA: British Wrestling Legend Wayne Bridges at New Frontiers

The FWA is honoured to announce that British wrestling legend Wayne Bridges will be at New Frontiers in Broxbourne on 2nd August to mark the beginning of the company’s relationship with the British Wrestlers’ Reunion.
Bridges became one of the most popular figures in British wrestling after his debut in 1964, wrestling all around the world including a stint in the old WWWF where he battled the likes of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and Don Muraco. By the 1980s he had been a World Heavyweight Champion and was one of the most respected grapplers in the industry, wowing audiences right up until his retirement at the end of the decade. Since then he has become an integral part of the British Wrestlers’ Reunion, which keeps members of the UK scene in contact with each other and offers them support in retirement.
The FWA believes that those of us who are fortunate enough to work in the wrestling industry today must never forget the legacy of those who came before us. It is because of their in-ring efforts and willingness to pass on their knowledge that we have a stage on which to perform and an audience to watch us. For this reason, the FWA is founding a new charitable trust fund which will help retired wrestlers deal with misfortunes that they suffered as a result of their sacrifices in the ring. A percentage of profits from ticket sales for all of our shows will go to the British Wrestler’s Reunion through this fund.
It is only fitting that as British wrestling crosses New Frontiers that we pay homage to the people who made such an exciting new chapter possible. With Wayne Bridges in attendance at the Broxbourne Civic Hall, a key player in British wrestling’s past will get to glimpse the future that he helped create.
